On Social Norms
[Lots and lots of one-sided profanity]
Warren: hang on--on the phone w/ mom
me: well, you can quote me...but leave out the profanity
Infallible
Thomas Kee, writing for Marketwatch (via Daring Fireball):
In fact, Sprint’s purchase of 30.5 million iPhones, worth $20B, is exactly what propelled AAPL’s earnings this past quarter.
No. That is simply not correct. The Sprint deal is for ~30.5 million iPhones, but it is over four years. Horace Dediu estimates that the first year would be ~4 million.
He also drops on us the...

Unwritten Rules Aren't Rules
So, that’s all the scuttlebutt today about the Saints “running up the score” on the Falcons to make sure Drew Brees broke Dan Marino’s passing record.
Bah, I say. Bah!
If Brees spots an injured corner back during a game and throws repeatedly at whoever that poor bastard is covering all you’ll hear is how the NFL is a merciless league that will exploit any weakness...

Regarding Conan
Dave: Conan Lite?
Dave: really?
me: hey, I don't make this stuff up
me: why you hatin' on Conan anyway?
me: or is it the idea that I'm Conan Lite?
Dave: you would be more like Conan Barleywine
me: ha

PlayBook Apps
So, the BlackBerry PlayBook will “run” just about every app under the sun, except iOS apps. Gruber wants to know:
Which one of these is the native SDK for the PlayBook. Which one’s best? What is RIM’s advice for how developers should write PlayBook apps?
I think it’s pretty clear that just having apps to run is what they need. It’s why Apple included the ability to run...
How to win SXSW? Show up.
SXSW is big. It’s bigger now than it’s ever been, so obviously more will be written about the conference this year than in any year past. It’s interesting to me as a first-timer, to see people lamenting the fact that it’s not the same conference that it used to be, the panels sucked, etc. I’ve been hearing this for about 6 years now and I can assure you that from the outsider perspective that...

SXSW Day 1
The shuttle was a nightmare. Everything from catching it, the ride in, and especially paying. Cash only is a pain in the ass. For some reason I thought the shuttle was part of the package. I was so very wrong about that.
Another thing I had no concept of was how insanely big this damn conference is. For example, I asked a Microsoft person why their booth was so hard to find and his reply...

SXSW Day 0
On Southwest flight 49, direct from Oakland to Austin. It’s filled with SXSW attendees and empty mini-bottles of booze. Greg and I contributed a meager 4 bottles, while our row-mate managed a single bottle. I should also mention that we’re in the last row, I’m not sure why it matters but it may be a harbinger of things to come I have no idea if this is a good or bad thing.

A Short Coaching Bio
I was asked to provide a bio for the Chico Fleet Feet Coaches web page. Since I’m incapable of anything other than extreme modesty when writing about myself, I commissioned Warren Taylor to write my bio. Here is what he provided:
Pat Berry enjoys forcing other people to do things they would otherwise find abhorrent. This makes him uniquely qualified as a running coach. It’s cold...
